Scientific programmes

One of IUBS’ main activities is to initiate, facilitate and coordinate research and other scientific activities necessitating international, interdisciplinary cooperation. IUBS conducts international collaborative scientific programmes in close cooperation with its ordinary and scientific members.

The topics of these programmes are selected on the basis of their originality and quality, as well as their relevance with respect to IUBS objectives, i.e. most importantly: their global scientific importance in the biological sciences and their potential to benefit from international participation. Applications usually proposed by ordinary or scientific members of IUBS. Decisions are made by the General Assembly after a review from the scientific committee that was appointed by the General Assembly.

Programmes, which usually run for three years, are carried out by a steering committee that is proposed by the applicant and that collaborates with scientific and national members.

Current and completed programmes

The IUBS currently runs several programmes, concerning education, climate change, and biodiversity to name a few. In the past the IUBS has successfully completed programmes concerning ethics, biodiversity change or traditional knowledge.

Seed Funding

The Union may provide funds to launch a programme, but the major funding is usually sought from external contracts. A scientific programme adopted by the General Assembly is normally implemented under the direct responsibility of its initiators. The Scientific Programme Committee of the General Assembly and the Officers see that the necessary conditions are fulfilled. Activity and finances of the programmes are annually reviewed.
