28th IUBS General Assembly

The 28th General Assembly of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS) was held on 18-22 January, 2004, at Cairo Sheraton Hotel, Cairo, Egypt, at the invitation of The Egyptian Academy for Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT).

Foreword

Part I of the present volume of Proceedings consists of the addresses given at the Opening Session of the General Assembly.

Part II includes the reports of the President, Secretary General and Treasurer which provide an account of the Union’s activities covering the period 1997-2000, and the Assembly’s final resolutions and recommendations regarding future IUBS activities in the period 2004-2007.

Part III presents the reports of activities received from Ordinary and Scientific Members, showing how they contributed to the Union’s activities during the last triennium, and

Part IV-Annexes contains the IUBS Statutes and By-laws, and the lists of names and contact addresses for the IUBS Members. We hope that this publication will serve as a useful tool to all those concerned in the work of the Union.

I would like to express our deep gratitude to Professor Mahmoud Hafez, Chairman of the IUBS National Committee, Dr. Moufid Shehab, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and Professor Fawzi Al Rifai, President of the Academy, in Egypt. We would also like to thank Professor Walter Erdelen, Assistant Director General for Natural Sciences of UNESCO and Dr. Mohammed Abdulrazzak, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Cairo, for their invaluable support, as well as our appreciation to the International Council for Science (ICSU), The Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for their co-sponsorship and financial support to the organization of the International Conference “Biological Sciences: Development and Society”, which was jointly organized with the IUBS General Assembly.
